Hi Reader, Hope you are having a nice summer. Ours has been particularly busy - so much so that I forgot to even send a July newsletter out so here we are in August, looking forward to the last bank holiday until the Christmas break (here in England anyway). That will also be the last long weekend before autumn sets in, so it is worth making the most of it while the weather holds. The BBQ & shack is still getting plenty of use here, so this month is mostly about outdoor cooking before the slow cooker and the bread tins come back out. For the bank holiday: ribsIf you have got the full day, this is a good one to plan around. My 3-2-1 method BBQ ribs are low effort once they are on, which frees you up to sort everything else while they cook. If you would rather keep it quick, the BBQ chicken and garlic kebabs are ready in a fraction of the time and go down well with a group. A look back at the pizza partyWe had another family pizza party recently and it turned out to be a good way to feed everyone without standing over the grill all afternoon. A kind of pop up pizza party if you will. We hosted it at my parents but I brough the oven and dough. Mum and Dad bought the sauce and all the toppings. It was served buffet style and only really required 30 minutes of prep and cooking on the day. If it has you thinking about your own setup, I have put together a guide to finding a good value pizza oven for home to take a look at those on the market (mainly Woody, Ooni and Gozney) which are great for garden use. Something for the tableAaron Franklin of Franklin Barbecue said in his book A meat-smoking manifesto* that "sides have become a staple of the barbecue spread and today we serve, eat and enjoy them just the same". My Greek pasta salad with feta holds up well outdoors and can be made ahead, which takes some pressure off on the day. If you cook any of these over the bank holiday, hit reply and let me know how it went. I read every message. That is it for this month. Autumn content is on the way, with new slow cooker and bread recipes as the weather turns. Dad What Cooks is all about firing up good food. Pizza, bread, BBQ or Ninja Foodie one pot dishes that’ll make the family ask for more. So roll up your sleeves, sharpen those knives (safely) so we can start cooking.
Hello, A bit of my starter (called Prue) has gone to live with a friend. I handed over a spoonful of starter a few weeks back as my friends were looking to get into baking. I scooped out a bit of Prue (10g) mixed with 50g flour and 40g water and gave it to them in a spare ramakin. They have taken to it faster than I did. Bread, then bagels, then olive bread and they have already bought a proper jar to keep it in. Am I now a proud grandparent? However - They have not named it and they need...
Happy March. Hope you had a nice start to the month. I spotted some summer weather on the way. I have two things to tell you about this month and I’m genuinely excited about both of them. Which is unusual for me, because I’m usually excited about neither of the things I have to tell you about. But here we are. A new tool on the site Dinner From Nowt is a recipe finder tool You know that moment when you open the fridge, stare into it for a while, close it, open it again as if something new...
Happy New Year (are we still doing that?!) First things first: I hope you had a wonderful festive season, however you spent it. I'll be honest with you. I took a proper break over Christmas and New Year. No recipe testing, no photography sessions, no staring at analytics. Just time with family and friends, far too much food (made by me and also other people), and some lovely walks with the dogs to justify second helpings. It was exactly what I needed, and I'm back feeling genuinely excited...
